Safety Concerns: Kwara RTEAN Advises Drivers to Shun Evening Journeys

The Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria in Kwara is cautioning drivers against nighttime travel on high-risk roads, citing the country's current security challenges. This warning comes as the association strives to mitigate potential dangers faced by motorists.

Abdulrahman Onikijipa, the state Chairman of the association, shared this guidance during a Saturday interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Ilorin, emphasizing the importance of safety on the roads.

Onikijipa's advice to motorists includes avoiding night journeys on hazardous routes and exercising heightened vigilance, particularly on highways and isolated roads where security risks are more pronounced.

The association has ramped up its efforts to educate drivers on essential safety protocols through a combination of regular meetings, briefings, and union engagements, according to Onikijipa.

The issue of kidnapping is being treated with utmost seriousness by the association, which has intensified its sensitisation campaigns across all branches to raise awareness among drivers.

Through these campaigns, the association stresses the need for drivers to be mindful of their surroundings and prioritize alertness while driving, especially during late hours when security incidents are more likely to occur.

Onikijipa specifically warned drivers against traveling at night, particularly on high-risk and isolated routes, where most security incidents tend to happen.

In addition to avoiding nighttime travel, the chairman also recommended that drivers verify road conditions and obtain necessary security updates before embarking on any journey.

Furthermore, Onikijipa advised motorists to ensure their mobile phones are fully charged, keep emergency contact numbers readily available, and refrain from making unnecessary stops or picking up unknown passengers in isolated areas.
