A Nigerian, Chukwuemeka Ahanonu, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a 56-year-old woman he attacked on a street in Leicester, United Kingdom, after crashing his car while under the influence of cannabis.

PUNCH Metro gathered from a report by Leicestershire Police that the 24-year-old assaulted the victim, Nila Patel, on June 24, 2025, along Infirmary Road. Following a trial at Leicester Crown Court, he was found guilty by a jury on Monday and sentenced on Tuesday.

PDP factions open peace talks as Wike denies split

The two Peoples Democratic Party factions have restarted the faltering peace process ahead of the March 29-30, 2026, national convention, which is being championed by the bloc led by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The bloc headed by Tanimu Turaki (SAN) and supported by the party governors confirmed on Wednesday that a fresh reconciliation process aimed at uniting aggrieved factions within the party had commenced.

Turaki, who disclosed this while addressing newsmen in Abuja, explained that the reconciliation, which was kick-started on Tuesday night, is yielding some results.

Gala confirm Osimhen’s return for Intercontinental derby

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen is set to return from injury in time for one of the biggest fixtures in Turkish football, with Galatasaray reporter Ali Naci Küçük confirming the Nigerian will be fit for the Istanbul derby against Fenerbahçe on April 26, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Osimhen has been sidelined since sustaining a hand injury during Galatasaray’s UEFA Champions League Round of 16 second-leg defeat to Liverpool earlier this month.

Kebbi attack: Gunmen kill 10 security officers

Gunmen, on Tuesday night, killed 10 security personnel — nine soldiers and one police officer — in a deadly ambush on troops in Kebbi State.

The incident occurred in the Giro Masa community, Shanga Local Government Area, where the assailants also burned two military gun trucks and reportedly left several civilians dead or injured.

Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, confirmed the attack on Wednesday after visiting victims at the Federal Teaching Hospital in Birnin Kebbi.

Kano gov sacks investment commissioner

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has relieved the Commissioner for Investment, Commerce and Industry, Shehu Sagagi, of his appointment with immediate effect.

The development was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature.

According to the statement, Sagagi has been directed to hand over the affairs of the ministry to the Director of Commerce, pending further directives.
