Manchester City's title aspirations suffered a significant setback after a 1-1 draw with West Ham, leaving them nine points adrift of Premier League leaders Arsenal, following the latter's dramatic 2-0 victory over Everton earlier on Saturday.

Pep Guardiola's team took the lead through Bernardo Silva's first-half goal, but Konstantinos Mavropanos equalized for West Ham before the interval, as City's pressure to keep pace with Arsenal took its toll.

City have a game in hand over Arsenal, but their chances of catching up appear slim, having drawn their last two league matches against relegation-threatened West Ham and Nottingham Forest, exposing the flaws in Guardiola's expensively rebuilt team.

The team's upcoming schedule is daunting, with a Champions League last-16 second leg against Real Madrid, a League Cup final against Arsenal, and an FA Cup quarter-final against Liverpool, followed by league matches against Chelsea and Arsenal.

By the end of this five-game stretch, City may be facing the prospect of a second consecutive season without major silverware, while West Ham have moved out of the relegation zone for the first time in 100 days, one point ahead of Forest.

Erling Haaland's barren spell has contributed to City's struggles, with the Norway striker scoring only three times in his last 12 league games and being largely anonymous against West Ham.

Guardiola's tactics have been subject to debate, as City dominated possession but failed to threaten West Ham, despite starting with Haaland and Omar Marmoush up front, leading to questions about the team's effectiveness at both ends of the pitch.

City took the lead in the 31st minute through Silva's fortunate goal, which looped in at the far post after his miscued cross caught goalkeeper Mads Hermansen by surprise.

However, their lead lasted only four minutes, as Gianluigi Donnarumma's blunder allowed Mavropanos to equalize for West Ham with a header from close range via the underside of the crossbar.

Antoine Semenyo missed a chance to restore City's lead before half-time, shooting wide after Haaland pounced on Aaron Wan-Bissaka's mistake, as the team's struggles in front of goal continued.

Guardiola, watching from the stands due to a touchline ban, introduced Rayan Cherki and Jeremy Doku in an attempt to turn the tide, but City looked increasingly impotent as the match wore on.

Cherki sent Haaland through for a low strike that Hermansen pushed around the post, and Haaland squandered another chance with a scuffed effort, while Cherki's free-kick clipped the bar.

Marc Guehi's stoppage-time blast over the bar summed up City's frustrations as their title hopes began to fade, with the team's defensive weaknesses and Haaland's goal drought combining to leave them bereft at both ends of the pitch.
