Colonel Sadio Camara, the Minister of Defense and Veterans of Mali, was seen at a meeting of Ministers of the Alliance of Sahel States in Ouagadougou on February 15, 2024, in a file photo, a stark contrast to the chaos that unfolded on April 26, 2026, when his family announced his death after an attack on his house.

Mali's defence minister, Sadio Camara, lost his life following a brutal attack, according to his family, who revealed the news on April 26, 2026, as the army clashed with jihadist fighters and separatist rebels near the capital Bamako and other cities.

Defence Minister Sadio Camara, his second wife, and two of his grandchildren were among the victims of a car bomb attack that targeted his home in the junta stronghold of Kita, outside Bamako, as confirmed by his family and an official.

The attack occurred on the heels of April 25's synchronised attacks by Tuareg rebels of the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) coalition and the jihadist Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), which targeted several areas across the vast arid country.

Jihadist fighters are believed to have killed the Mali junta's defence minister, General Sadio Camara, using a car bomb left outside his residence near the capital Bamako, according to his family, government, and military sources, who disclosed the information on Sunday.

The coordinated attack that resulted in Camara's death was staged on Saturday, when jihadist and rebel groups launched simultaneous attacks across the African nation, including on the junta stronghold at Kati, near the capital, where Camara and other junta leaders reside.

A relative, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that the minister and at least three members of his family were killed by the car bomb, which was allegedly left by a group affiliated with Al Qaeda.
