Residents of Opuama Kingdom in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State were filled with joy and excitement as the Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ward 13, Hon. Joseph Ede Alakere, paid a working visit to his hometown on June 2, 2026.
The visit was aimed at inspecting several ongoing NDDC road construction projects and other community development initiatives personally facilitated by the grassroots leader for the benefit of the people of Opuama Kingdom.
Accompanying Hon. Alakere on the inspection tour was the contractor handling the projects and one of his development partners. According to Hon. Alakere, he deliberately invited the contractor to the community to personally assess the progress and impact of the projects being executed.
During the inspection, the contractor expressed satisfaction and admiration for the level of progress recorded. He commended Hon. Joseph Alakere for his commitment to ensuring quality delivery through constant supervision and monitoring of the projects.
Speaking during the visit, the contractor said:
"This is the first time I am crossing rivers to inspect projects by myself. Many people have invited me to their communities before, but I declined because I am not familiar with riverine areas. However, when Joe called my attention, I decided to honour his invitation because he is a trusted partner. Coming to this community, I have seen firsthand how people are suffering in this part of the country. I assure you that all the ongoing projects will be completed, and more developmental projects will be executed in the future."
In his response, Hon. Joseph Ede Alakere informed the contractor about the 2026 edition of the Opuama Kingdom Fishing Festival, one of the most cherished cultural celebrations in the area.
As part of his support for the festival and community empowerment efforts, Contractor donated the sum of ₦500,000 towards the successful hosting of the festival. He further empowered 20 shop owners in the community with cash grants ranging from ₦20,000 to ₦50,000 to support and boost their businesses.
Demonstrating his unwavering commitment to education and human capital development, the Contractor also awarded educational scholarships to three families, covering their children's education from primary school through university level. In addition, the mothers of the beneficiary families will receive a monthly stipend of ₦20,000 every month to assist with their welfare and family needs.
The generous gestures were warmly received by residents, who described Hon. Joseph Ede Alakere as a compassionate leader whose dedication to community development continues to positively impact lives across Opuama Kingdom.
The visit further reaffirmed his commitment to grassroots development, youth empowerment, educational advancement, and the overall well-being of the people of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.
