Chaos in the Ring: Appah, Carter Efe to headline Independence Day clash

Nigerian boxer Godday Appah and streamer Oderhohwo Joseph Efe, known as Carter Efe, will headline Chaos in the Ring on October 1, as the event returns to Lagos to mark Nigeria’s Independence Day celebrations.

Appah will defend the WBO African Light Heavyweight Continental Championship against Ghana’s Seth “Freezy Macbones” Gyimah, while Efe takes on rapper Darlington Okoye, known as Speed Darlington, in the celebrity boxing bout headlining the entertainment card.

Ahead of the fight, the official press conference for the event degenerated into chaos, as both sets of fighters clashed at their face-offs, forcing security personnel to their limits to prevent a brawl. The defining moment came during the confrontation between Appah and Gyimah, with both men attempting to close the distance between them.

Gyimah ducked past security in an attempt to reach Appah, while Appah shoved a security operative aside as the team struggled to keep them apart.

The drama continued when Efe and Speed Darlington also clashed. Efe stripped down to his boxers and launched himself across the table separating them, while Speed Darlington responded by reaching for a stack of chairs.

Tension also spread to the professional card, with Basit “Jokerboy” Adebayo and his opponent exchanging words in Yoruba before the confrontation was defused.

Chaos in the Ring will hold at The Balmoral, Federal Palace Hotel, Lagos, on Thursday, October 1, with Appah defending Nigerian pride against a Ghanaian challenger who has vowed to leave Lagos with the belt.

It will be Appah’s first defence of a continental title since claiming the WBO Africa cruiserweight crown with a split-decision win over Ezra Arenyeka in May, a bout organisers had billed as a symbolic peace fight between the Ijaw and Itsekiri communities of the Niger Delta.

Efe, for his part, enters the celebrity bout off the back of a unanimous decision win over singer Habeeb “Portable” Badmus at the same venue in May, a victory that earned him a promised ₦50m reward from businessman Emeka “E-Money” Okonkwo.

The professional card also features Adebayo against Fatiu Jomoni, Eworitse “African King” Arenyeka against Lekan “The Engine” Muibi, Yusuf “Swaggu” Adeniji against Tagoe, Israel Makinde against Abiodun Muyideen, and Rimpassakde “The King Cobra” Kinda against Rosnov, bringing together a deep field of fighters from across the continent.

Founder of Chaos in the Ring and Balmoral Group Promotions, Dr Ezekiel Adamu, said the event represents an effort to build a home for African boxing and introduce the continent’s talent to a global audience.

“It’s never about perfection. It’s always about momentum,” Adamu said.

SuperSport and DAZN will broadcast the event to audiences across Africa and around the world, as organisers look to build on a platform that has continued to grow at the intersection of sport, entertainment and African culture.
